History
THE WAMPATUCK COUNTRY CLUB OF CANTON 1974Our Club was incorporated in 1904, and we owned seventy-seven acres of land on the southerly shores of Reservoir Pond. Our main clubhouse was originally located where the second green is at the present time. The two main ways to obtain entrance to the club were by way of a lane on Capper's property adjacent to Pleasant Garden Road and many found it easier to canoe from the dam on Pleasant Street. In those days there was trap shooting, tennis, and canoeing in addition to golf. Holidays at Wampatuck were the highlight of the social season and the parties and food were superlative. (Tim Connolly is carrying on that great tradition today).
The clubhouse was moved to its present location in 1959 when five of the new fairways and greens were open for use by members after being closed in 1958. In 1960, everything was back to normal and in excellent condition. The man who saw that all this was accomplished was Leo Becchia who was president from 1954-1961.
The women were always welcome but there was no formal women's division until 1960 when Irene Hilton became the first president.
The renovations and additions to the present clubhouse were begun in 1966 under the capable leadership of Pat Graham, President.
Our Club Pro, John Ford came to us in 1953, and before that Jim Danahy and Walter Nervi. John Ford, in addition to being a fine instructor has kept our club one of the nicest to belong to and one of the best run in Massachusetts.
During John's illness in 1970 our assistant Pro, Arnie Eardley, never broke stride and kept business as usual giving lessons, starting times, and running tournaments as though he'd done it as many years as John Ford (42).
Our membership expanded to about two hundred members and stabilized there. In addition, there are eight senior and honorary members, twenty-nine clergy, seventy-five wives and single members, twelve junior members. All members of our club derive many benefits, privileges, and much pleasure being a member of the Wampatuck Country Club of Canton.
Today Wampatuck has 300 Corporate Members, 19 Honorary Members, 7 Senior Members, 78 Young Adult Members, 93 Social Members, and 37 Junior Members.
